Island Pilates of Martha’s Vineyard

A boutique studio, located in Oak Bluffs, serves all ages, sizes and shapes; training those with chronic physical issues as well as challenging the strongest athlete.

Expect Classical Pilates training that is specific, clear and concise while bringing empathy and humor to the session workout. Everyone leaves their session with increased awareness, strength, and flexibility and a sense of general well being and energy.

Reformer & Apparatus Training

The studio is equipped to provide reformer & apparatus training.  The Reformer, originally called the Universal Reformer, aptly named for “universally reforming the body.” A full complement of equipment and accessories were designed by Joseph Pilates, and are found in the studio; the Cadillac, Wunda Chair, High “Electric Chair”, Spine Corrector, Ladder Barrel and Ped-o-Pul.

Seventy-five percent of the Pilates repertoire is performed on the reformer and mat, while the other pieces are used for creating a balanced workout and addressing the individual needs of a student.

Small Group Pilates Mat

While Mat classes are the typical entry into Pilates for many participants, Classical Mat exercises are often difficult for a beginner because they do not have the core strength to perform the exercises correctly.

The Classical Pilates Method is based on a full, integrated system of equipment, and the Mat exercises are just part of the technique (only 25 percent of the Pilates exercise repertoire can be performed on a Mat) and often the first step toward learning the equipment.
Small group classes are taught in the studio as well as complimented with local facilities in the community at The YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard and at the Field Club in Edgartown.
